The Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has been strengthening its collaboration with numerous international organizations to enhance its regional, global influence and visibility, as instructed by the Heads of State, as well as outlined in the Turkic World Vision 2040 and the OTS Strategy 2022-2026. Key initiatives include high-level meetings and signed agreements across various sectors like sustainable development, good governance, green transition, trade, health, gender, youth, quality education and etc.
United Nations and European Union: The OTS has prioritized engagement with the UN, aiming for observer status and fostering collaboration on issues such as attaining and contributing to sustainable development goals at regional and global levels. In this respect, hosting the inaugural “Turkic Week” at the UN Office in Geneva is a notable achievement for such an engagement. The OTS also seeks stronger ties with the EU, especially in transport and energy areas, and exploring opportunities for cooperation with EU and its institutions in Brussels.
Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Joint Action Plans: The OTS has formalized partnerships through MoUs with organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNIDO, UN-Habitat, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO)and TIKA for facilitating initiatives in health, urban development, industrial development and transformation, and technical and humanitarian for Member States and Observes.
Sectoral Collaborations: Efforts to collaborate with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) have led to digital TIR pilot projects among OTS members, enhancing transport efficiency. The OTS is also engaging with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on sustainable energy projects and exploring sectoral partnerships with organizations like the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
Future Goals: The OTS continues to work on pending observer status with organizations like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and seeks to formalize relationships with entities like ASEAN and the African Union. Additionally, ongoing dialogues with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) are aimed at establishing normative and collaborative frameworks.
Through these efforts, the OTS is positioning itself as a responsible partner of international community, a regional actor and expanding its influence on regional and global issues, with a focus on sustainable development, economic integration, and regional stability.
