27. Cooperation among the Ministers of Environment and Ecology

Objectives

The key documents of our Organization, in particular, the “Turkic World Vision - 2040" and the OTS Strategy for 2022 – 2026 give priority to environmental protection and climate change issues in the national and joint policies of the Member States and take joint actions to prevent and respond to natural and manmade disasters and mitigate their effects.

Mechanisms

In order to cooperate with key institutions and international organizations in Member States and Observers on various aspects of water management, irrigation, drought prevention and other environmental issues, the Memorandum on the establishment of the Drought Prevention Institute of the Organization of Turkic States was signed between the OTS Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary on 10 November 2022 in Samarkand. This Institute has started its activity under the OTS Representative Office in Budapest.

Besides, upon the initiative of the Secretariat, the 1st Meeting of the Ministers responsible for the Environment and Ecology of the Organization of Turkic States was held within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 14 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. This inaugural Meeting paved a road to a new cooperation mechanism within the OTS in the field of ecology, environment and climate change issues.

Framework

The following key documents were adopted in the field of ecology and environment cooperation within the framework of the OTS:

  • Turkic Green Vision: Unity for a Sustainable Future was signed during the 11th Summit of the OTS held on 6 November 2024 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic;
  • Declaration of the First Meeting of the Ministers responsible for the Environment and Ecology of the OTS.
