The Sixth Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States (Turkic Council), was hosted by H.E.Sooronbai Zheenbekov, President of the Kyrgyz Republic on 3 September 2018 in Cholpon-Ata on the theme of “Youths and National Sports”. H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey honored the Summit, whereas H.E. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and H.E. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary participated as guests of the Host. Secretary General Ambassador Ramil Hasan also participated at the Summit.
At the Summit, the Heads of State delivered their speeches and shared their views on further development on the cooperation among Turkic Speaking States. At his opening speech, President Zheenbekov welcomed the Presidents to Cholpon-Ata where the opening ceremony of Third World Nomad Games was held the day before with a wide participation from all over the world. Furthermore, he congratulated the Secretariat for its successful activities since the last Summit.
H.E. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan underlined the importance of furthering the Turkic integration with an architecture based on the basis of a Concept Paper to be prepared in consultation with both existing affiliated and related organizations of the Turkic Council and relevant authorities of the Member States to be submitted to the 7th Summit of the Turkic Council.
In his speech, President of Azerbaijan H.E. Aliyev underlined the significance of transportation and energy projects in the Turkic Speaking States highlighting their added value to empower regional cooperation. President of Turkey H.E. Erdoğan also referred to these projects and stated the Turkic Council’s vital role to increase institutional cooperation among the Turkic Speaking States.
In his speech, President of Uzbekistan H.E. Mirziyoyev noted their willingness to participate in the meetings and project of the Turkic Council. Referring to the Modern Silk Road Joint Tour Package Project of the Turkic Council, he expressed their readiness to include historical cities such as Bukhara and Khiva in the said joint package.
H.E. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary referring to common cultural and historical ties with the Turkic States stated that they would like to work closely with the Turkic Council and expressed his gratitude to the Presidents for considering granting observer status to Hungary at the Council.
Then, Ambassador Hasan addressed the Heads of State and reported about the activities carried out by the Turkic Council including the implemented projects and the work undertaken during his tenure. He also presented the Turkic Council`s four-year activity report to the Presidents. The Presidents thanked him for his contributions to the work of the Secretariat in 2014-2018 and expressed their wishes of success for the new Secretary General Mr. Baghdad Amreyev.
The Presidents wished success to the Kyrgyz President for the assumption of the Chairmanship of the Turkic Council. At the same time, they also instructed the relevant authorities of the Member States to strengthen their efforts for Turkic Council’s obtaining observer status at the United Nations General Assembly.
At the end of the meeting, Heads of State signed the Cholpon-Ata Declaration of the 6th Summit of the Turkic Council and adopted the Concept of Integration of Turkic Speaking States and instructed the relevant authorities of the Member States for its implementation to be coordinated by the Turkic Council Secretariat.
They also adopted the Joint Statement on the 90th anniversary of Chyngyz Aitmatov and the Joint Statement on the development of cooperation in the field of national sports and youth.
The Presidents welcomed the intention of Hungary to work closely with the Turkic cooperation organizations and signed the Decision on Granting Hungary the observer status at the Turkic Council.
At the Summit, appointments of Mr. Ambassador Bagdad Amreyev as Secretary General of the Turkic Council, Dr. Ömer Kocaman as Deputy Secretary General of the Turkic Council and Mr. Darkhan Kydyrali as President of the Turkic Academy were approved by the Decision signed by the Heads of State.
