In the frame of his visit to New York on the occasion of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly, Secretary General of the Turkic Council Baghdad Amreyev attended High-level event "People and the Planet: Central Asia Calls for International Solidarity" organized by the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN on 27 September 2018 in New York.
The event was opened with the address by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Kubatbek Boronov. In his opening address, he called for international solidarity under the auspices of "People and Planet" to lure the attention of the world community to the environmental problem of uranium legacy sites in Central Asia, and to attract donor support to the Fund for Environmental Rehabilitation, created by the EBRD.
The event highlighted the danger for the environment and health of the population, especially in Ferghana valley spreading across eastern Uzbekistan, the southern Kyrgyz Republic and northern Tajikistan with 14 million inhabitants.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Secretary General of the OSCE, Ambassadors of regional countries, international officers and diplomats participated at the event held in the margins of the 73rd UN General Assembly.
The day before the stated event, Secretary General of the Turkic Council Baghdad Amreyev met with Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev, Permanent Observer of the OIC to the UN.
Parties exchanged views on the current relations between the Turkic Council and the OIC and underlined that the relationship between the two organizations should be carried forward with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2017 in Astana on the margins of the First OIC Summit on Science and Technology.
Secretary General Amreyev provided Ambassador Mehdiyev with detailed information about the activities and agenda of the Turkic Council and stated that in accordance with the decisions taken at the 13th Islamic Summit Conference convened in Istanbul in April 2016 and 43rd Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) held in Tashkent in October 2016, cooperation between the Turkic Council and the OIC were encouraged to enhance in various areas.
Ambassador Mehdiyev expressed satisfaction with the meeting and stated that the OIC Permanent Observer Mission to the UN will help improve the relations between the two organization and give the necessary support to the joint cooperation projects that can be carried out in the forthcoming period.
Turkic Council Project Directors Ali Çiviler and Assan Mazhitov accompanied Secretary General Amreyev at both meetings.
