The delegation headed by Secretary General of the Turkic Council H.E.Baghdad Amreyev and consisted with the Secretary General of TURKSOY Mr. Dusein Kaseinov and President of Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Mrs. Gunay Afandiyeva met with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Sahiba Gafarova on 19 January 2021 in Baku.
Speaker of National Assembly Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova welcomed the delegation in Azerbaijan and extended her appreciation to the Secretary General of Turkic Council for continues support to the legitimate struggle in restoring the sovereignty of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan during the Karabakh war.
She said that the visit of the heads of Turkic organizations to the liberated lands of Azerbaijan is the clearest example of the support of the Azerbaijani people, which corresponds to the spirit of brotherhood and unity. She stressed that Karabakh war contributed to the consolidation of unity among the Turkic-speaking states and necessity for the further strengthening.
Secretary General, on behalf of delegation, sincerely congratulated brotherly Azerbaijan with the great victory of Azerbaijan people in its just war on the liberation of occupied territories.
B.Amreyev briefed the Speaker about the visit of the delegation of Turkic cooperation organizations to the Aghdam and Fuzuli regions of Azerbaijan on January 17, 2021.
He noted that the visit aimed at familiarizing with the consequences of the destruction of the historical, cultural, and religious heritage of Azerbaijan during the occupation.
In turn, Secretary General of TURKSOY D.Kaseinov said that the current state of the cities of freed lands proves that they suffered from barbarism in relation to other culture and people and noted that the world should considered it as an example of cultural vandalism.
President of Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Mrs. Gunay Afendiyeva also emphasized that Fuzuli was almost completely leveled to the ground and not one whole building remained.
Speaker noted that the Azerbaijani Parliament attaches great importance to cooperation with the Turkic-speaking fraternal countries and stressed that accession of Uzbekistan to the Turkic Council gave a powerful impetus. She noted that despite the pandemic in 2019-2020, many meetings and events were held under the Chairmanship of Azerbaijan in the fields of health, economy, trade, transport, youth, tourism and customs.
Parties discussed with the Speaker the state and prospects of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the Member States of the Turkic Council. B.Amreyev informed Speaker that as part of the work to strengthen parliamentary cooperation since 2011 the missions of the Turkic Council have participated in 22 elections, including 10 presidential, 12 parliamentary elections and 1 referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution.
Head of Turkic Council drew attention to the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation in the framework of TURKPA and further strengthening collaboration of inter-parliamentary friendship groups between the Member States of the Turkic Council.
The parties stated that inter-parliamentary cooperation has also intensified in terms of supporting candidates of the Member States for elections in international parliamentary organizations, including the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the OIC Parliamentary Union and the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
