Secretary General Baghdad Amreyev started his official visit to New York on the occasion of the opening of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly and held a meeting with UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on South-South Cooperation and Director of UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) Mr. Jorge Chediek on 26 September 2018.
Mr. Chediek congratulated Ambassador Baghdad Amreyev on his appointment as the Secretary General of the Turkic Council. He expressed his confidence that the cooperation between the two organization will be enhanced further during the term of Secretary General Amreyev, saying that Turkic Council is an important development partner for UNOSSC on a broad range of issues.
Secretary General Amreyev expressed his gratitude to the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for his significant efforts in the development of relations between the two organizations.
Secretary General Amreyev stated that the Turkic Council is determined to be engaged in more inclusive cooperation in areas of common concern to both organizations.
During the meeting, Parties expressed their commitment to close cooperation between the two institutions under the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2016.
Secretary General also expressed readiness in promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation between the Member States of the Turkic Council and other countries in the Global South through innovative and comprehensive regional and cross-regional cooperation initiatives geared towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
Highlighting the contributions of the Turkic Council towards the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promotion South-South and Triangular Cooperation Mr. Chediek reiterated their gratitude for the Global South South Development EXPO 2017 that was hosted by the Government of Turkey on 27-30 November 2017 in Antalya with the support of the Turkic Council. He also underlined UNOSSC’s commitment to cooperate with the Turkic Council in all relevant areas.
Expressing that Modern Silk Road Joint Tourism Tour Package Project of the Turkic Council is a convenient field that both organizations can further their cooperation, Mr. Chediek mentioned the “Silk Road Smart Cities, Smart Tourism” conference to be organized in Dubai on 25 October 2018 and called on the Secretary General to attend the program and to present the Silk Road Tour Package. Touching on last year’s successful Global South South EXPO initiative of both organizations, he also invited the Secretary General to the Global South South EXPO to be convened in New York on 28-30 November 2018. Furthermore, Mr. Chediek invited Secretary General to the 2nd High Level Conference on South South Cooperation, that will be held on 2019.
