The OTS Secretariat organized the Special Meeting of Rectors of the Turkic Universities Union (TURKUNIB) jointly with the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, the Azerbaijan State University of Economics - the current Chair-university in Office of the TURKUNIB, and Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, on 6-7 June 2023 in Samarkand – the “Capital of the Turkic civilization”.
The Special Meeting was attended by Rectors, high level officials and representatives of the TURKUNIB member universities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan.

Komiljon Karimov, the First Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Aziz Abduhakimov, Rector of the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, Prof. Dr. Adalat Muradov, Rector of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan, Rector of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, Prof. Dr. Gulchekhra Rikhsiyeva, Rector of Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, Prof. Dr. Muhittin Şimşek, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University, delivered opening remarks at the Special Meeting which was moderated by Mr. Sadi Jafarov, the Deputy Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States
Addressing the audience, H.E. Komiljon Karimov, the First Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of Uzbekistan welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of the event which would contribute to streamlining the cooperation in the field of science and education.
Sadi Jafarov, the Deputy Secretary General conveyed the congratulatory message of H.E. Ambassador Kubanychbek Omuraliev, the Secretary General of the OTS and emphasized the significance of discussing the subjects relating to cooperation within the TURKUNIB with a view to achieve concrete results by using the opportunities of the members in the sphere of education.
In accordance with the agenda of the meeting, the Parties discussed the modalities of the TURKUNIB, the current opportunities and challenges of the Orkhun Exchange Program, and elaborated the Road Map on the activities of the TURKUNIB for 2023-2024. They also exchanged views on the subject of application of the universities wishing to become a member of the Union.
In the course of the meeting, the Turkic literature titles encyclopedia consisting of 20 volumes, published by the Khoja Ahmed Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University was presented by the Chairman of its Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Muhittin Shimshek.
Following the Special Meeting, the Parties also participated at a scientific Workshop titled “Afrasiyab (Alp Er Tonga) as a historical figure who laid the foundations of the Turkic statehood”, which was organized by the Uzbek side in cooperation with the OTS Secretariat.
During the workshop, which was held at the Museum of the History of Samarkand “Afrasiyab”, the scientists from Turkic countries shared their views on the role of Alp Er Tonga as a significant historical figure and personality in the Turkic world.
Honorary speaker, the Turkish scientist, Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar addressed the participants of the workshop via the videoconference and shared his vision on preserving Turkic heritage and educating younger generation.
