Turkic Council Secretariat contributed to the United Nation Office for South-South Cooperation Publication “South-South in Action on Peace and Development”, which is presented at BAPA+40 Side Event: South-South Cooperation on Peace and Development at the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation in Buenos-Aires, Argentina on 19 March 2019.
This thematic publication is showcasing 21 cases studies of South-South and Triangular Cooperation for peace and development offered by UN agencies, member states and inter-governmental organizations.
The Turkic Council is listed as a partner organization to this publication and one of the case studies is about the Turkic Council’s Junior Diplomats Joint Training Programme entitled as “South-South Cooperation and Diplomacy: Junior Diplomats Training Programme (JDTP) in Chapter II.
The publication notes that the effective engagement of diplomats is also essential for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Turkic Council has devised a tailored training initiative in order to support the evolution of cooperation among young diplomats.
With this initiative, the Turkic Council is focused on the creation of a strong friendship bonds among young diplomats, building a sense of regional ownership, improving their capacity for dialogue, and other technical skills believing that they will take forward the long-lasting friendly relations among the Turkic Speaking States, as these young diplomats in their carrier paths will become Ambassadors and high-ranking government officials of their respective countries.
Since the inception of the Programme in 2014, 113 junior diplomats have benefitted from the training program, 51 of them were women, therefore contributing to SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).
The Secretariat of the Turkic Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop south-south and triangular cooperation with the UNOSSC on 4 April 2016 and deepened its ties since that date. In this context, Turkic Council was participated in the Global South-South Development Expo 2016 in Dubai, and upon the proposal of the UNOSSC joint report on the contributions of the Turkic Council to the South-South cooperation presented at the UN Headquarters in New York in September 2017.
Another major stage in this direction was the Turkic Council’s becoming an implementing partner of the GSSD EXPO 2017 that was hosted by the Government of Turkey on 27-30 November 2017 in Antalya. The Secretariat also actively participated in the work of the GSSD EXPO 2018 in New-York on 28-30 November 2018.
