Secretary General of Turkic Council Baghdad Amreyev attended and delivered the statement at the High Level Commemorative Event to mark the 60th anniversary of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Belgrade on 12 October 2021.
The Secretary General underlined in his speech that NAM played a great role during the Cold War, considerably reducing the geography and the temperature of the Cold War, therefore the founding fathers of NAM deserve to be commemorated as the great leaders and visionaries of the modern world whose ideas are still relevant in today’s world.
The Secretary General thanked the Chairman of the NAM, President of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev for conducting a successful leadership and promoting the multilateral diplomacy, strengthening cooperation and solidarity between the NAM Member States as well as his valuable initiative to hold the online Summit of the NAM Contact Group in response to Covid -19, which played a critical role in forging global solidarity.
He briefed the audience on the Turkic Council’s growing cooperation with the UN, its specialized agencies, as well as with other regional and international organizations and actors. In this regard, he underscored that Turkic Council was first among international organizations to develop strong ties with WHO from the first days of the pandemic, signed an MOU and a joint Action Plan, as well as capacity building programs in the Member States.
The Secretary General noted that the importance that the Turkic Council attaches to the enhancement of peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond is clearly emphasized in the founding documents as well as in all Summit Declarations, and Organization’s approach to the regional issues is based first and foremost on the principle of regional ownership.
In this context, he briefed the distinguished participants that the Turkic Council recently held its Extraordinary Meeting of Foreign Ministers on the situation in Afghanistan in Istanbul and adopted an 11 points Statement reflecting the united position of the Member States to contribute to the efforts of the Afghan people in their endeavor to achieve national reconciliation, stability, lasting peace and development in Afghanistan.
Secretary General B. Amreyev also reiterated the readiness of the Turkic Council to contribute to the efforts of the global community in tackling shared challenges and reaffirmed the willingness of the Organization to cooperate with the Non-Aligned Movement.
