At the 10th Summit of the Heads of State of Turkic Speaking States held in Istanbul in 2010, TURKSOY which has been pursuing its activities to do research on, develop, promote and transmit Turkic culture to future generations since its foundation, had suggested to select one city of the Turkic World as its cultural capital each year. This was approved by the Heads of States.
Upon approval of this suggestion, the opening ceremony of “Astana, the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2012” took place in the presence of the Term Coordinator of TURKSOY and Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey Ertugrul GUNAY on February 24th, 2011.
Secretary General Halil Akıncı attented the opening ceremony. The Governor of the city of Eskisehir which will be the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World in 2013, Kadir Koçdemir as well as the Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Eskisehir Yilmaz Buyukersen along with many senators and MPs from Kazakhstan were also present at the ceremony.
